Class 6504
Code 6504 applies to a wide variety of foodstuff manufacturing that is not otherwise classified (NOC). It is a heterogeneous class, the scope of which may be measured in part by its phraseology. The class is not restricted to the particular products specified in its phraseology or this scope and includes simple preparation or packaging of already manufactured products. There can be wet mixing, dry grinding, cooking and blending operations. Some examples of products prepared by utilizing any one or more of these operations are ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salad dressings, tartar sauce, spaghetti or tomato sauces, and chili con carne. The canning, bottling or packaging of the products fall within the scope of Code 6504.
Additionally, the following specific operations are properly assignable to Code 6504: dehydrating eggs; dehydrating coffee or tea; gelatin manufacturing as a refined food product (classify gelatin manufacturing for non-food purposes to Code 4653); melba toast manufacturing (no baking of bread); and peanut butter manufacturing.
Code 6504 has also been assigned to insureds that manufacture or process imitation dairy products such as creams, whipped toppings and sour creams. The canning of cream that is aerated under pressure is also assigned to Code 6504.
Refer to Code 2003, which is assigned by analogy to insureds engaged in potato chip, macaroni, pasta or noodle manufacturing.
The preparation and packaging of sandwiches is assigned to either Code 9079—Restaurant NOC/Caterer or Code 6504. When insureds assigned to Code 5192 manufacture sandwiches that are to be sold from vending machines serviced by the insured, the manufacture of these sandwiches is assigned to Code 9079, that is, providing the sandwich preparation and packaging area is physically segregated and there is no interchange of labor. Otherwise, the sandwich preparation and packaging operations are properly assigned to Code 5192. Code 6504 is distinguished from the restaurant/caterer classification by the fact that Code 6504 is applicable to the risk that manufactures food sundries, which are sold to others on a wholesale basis.
Code 6504 is also assigned to the manufacturing of breakfast bars, granola bars, power bars, energy bars, diet bars, low carbohydrate (low carb) bars, etc., where the primary ingredients are the grains listed, soy-based ingredients, and naturally or chemically mixed or blended ingredients.
Code 6504 is assigned to insureds whose principal or entire product is condensed milk, evaporated milk, dried milk, dehydrated milk, malted milk, milk powder and similar milk products. The main process involved is the evaporating of water from the raw milk in tanks by means of heat and the canning or packaging of the end product.
Vegetable packing and fruit packing operations are assigned to Code 2105.
Fruit evaporating or preserving as well as pickle mfg. operations are assigned to Code 6504.
