Class 9014
Code 9014 applies to employers that primarily provide janitorial services for others. Janitorial services are defined as keeping a building clean by routine dusting; mopping, vacuuming, waxing, or polishing floors; emptying trash; cleaning or washing interior walls; and cleaning, sanitizing, and deodorizing restrooms. Code 9014 is also assigned to janitorial service companies that perform various types of maintenance or minor repair work for upkeep of a building. To qualify for Code 9014, maintenance or minor repair work must take place along with janitorial services that would ordinarily be assigned to Code 9014.
These maintenance or minor repair operations may include, but are not limited to, painting, cleaning windows, changing light bulbs, assisting occupants in the placement of furniture, replacing glass panes, clearing drains, and cleaning carpets. Code 9014 is not intended for a contractor such as a painter, plumber, electrician, carpenter, or “handyperson.” These employers must be assigned to the appropriate construction classifications. Code 9014 is not intended for heavy construction operations conducted by the janitorial risk. Operations such as new construction, structural alterations, or rewiring a building are considered beyond the scope of Code 9014 and are separately classified.
Code 9014 applies to specialty contractors who perform residential chimney cleaning using vacuum suction equipment.
Code 9014 includes termite control. Carpentry repair or use of poisonous gases to be separately rated.
Carpentry repair work or operations involving the use of poisonous gases are not included in Code 9014. Insect control operations involving the use of poisonous gases (fumigation) are assigned to Code 4828. Work, such as covering a structure with a material to retain the poisonous gas that has been pumped into a structure, is additionally included in Code 4828. Removal of the material upon completion of the fumigation work is also included under Code 4828.
Insect control work that involves removal and replacing of beams or other carpentry work directly related to insect control is assigned to Code 5403 or 5645 depending on the type of building involved.
Payroll division must be made with respect to individual employees who perform extermination, carpentry or fumigation work when the records of the employer disclose the correct allocation of the individual employee's time.
As noted in the classification footnote, window-cleaning operations, both inside and outside, are included in Code 9014 without any height restrictions. In fact, Code 9014 also applies to specialty contractors that are engaged exclusively in window cleaning operations. The power wash cleaning of building exteriors is also detailed in the classification footnote. The power wash cleaning of non-masonry dwellings not exceeding two stories in height is assigned to Code 9014. All other exterior building power washing is classified as Code 5213. Refer to Codes 5545 and 5547 for the power or pressure cleaning of roofs.
Code 9014 is also applied, by analogy, to the field service employees of dealers engaged exclusively in inspecting, testing, tagging, charging and/or recharging of fire extinguishers away from shop. Refer to Code 8018 for the charging or recharging of fire extinguishers in shop.
