Class 9063
Code 9063 is applied to insureds engaged in the operation of Young Men’s or Young Women’s Christian or Hebrew Associations. The classification contemplates all employees of these associations including clerical office workers.
“Ys” generally provide residential facilities, cafeteria or restaurant service, and recreational, social and educational programs, which may offer guidance and training by teachers and instructors in activities such as swimming, sports clinics, self-defense courses, various table or board games, dance classes, arts and crafts, and cultural, vocational or educational courses.
Specialty camps engaged in providing amateur, youth or recreational sports training, not professional or semiprofessional sports training, are not assigned to Code 9178 or Code 9179. Rather, these camp operations, also referred to as sports clinics, are assigned to Code 9015 if overnight sleeping accommodations are offered. If no overnight sleeping accommodations are offered, assign to Code 9063. Refer to Code 9178 or Code 9179 for professional or semiprofessional sports.
Code 9063 is applied to all employees, including clerical employees, of risks known as fitness clubs, health clubs, spas, massage salons, gymnasiums, or exercise clubs. These facilities provide exercise programs for their members and, in some cases, the general public. They also provide instruction or guidance in conjunction with health or exercise activities. The facilities and services vary depending on the particular operation. Some facilities employ instructors who demonstrate and supervise exercises without the use of equipment. Others maintain equipment such as barbells, weight machines, treadwalks and stationary bicycles. Attendants are generally employed to evaluate the type of equipment best suited to their customers’ needs. Swimming pools, hot water wading and soaking areas, whirlpool baths, saunas and juice bars including food service may be available at these institutes. Most of these organizations maintain lockers and shower facilities. Insureds that operate indoor tennis, racquetball, or handball courts are assigned by analogy to Code 9063.
Tanning clinics or suntan parlors operated in conjunction with health or exercise institutes are also classified to Code 9063. Refer to 9586 for tanning parlors that operate as separate businesses.
Code 9063 also applies to insureds that operate baths, provided such operations are not otherwise classified in the manual. These baths provide facilities where customers may use steam rooms and receive rubdowns prior to showering. The classification includes all employees of such baths and clerical workers.
This scope also applies to YMHAs and YWHAs whose names have been changed to Jewish Community Centers (JCCs).
National boards of “Y” associations or national boards of Boy or Girl Scout Councils, which are separate and distinct entities and act only in an advisory capacity regarding operations of the individual “Ys” or Scout Councils, are not classified to Code 9063. Their clerical employees are classified to Code 8810. Their employees who perform office and travel duties are classified to Code 8742.
Refer to Code 9015 for an in-depth review of camp classification assignments.
